Nashville Ranks 18th for Most Literate City Nationwide

Nashville is the nation’s 18th most literate city, according to a study by Central Connecticut State University — ahead of every city in the South except Atlanta, New Orleans, and Austin, Texas.

The study by professor John Miller ranked cities with at least 250,000 people according to their reading habits and education level. Key factors in his rankings were newspaper circulation, online news reading, online book purchasing, the number of book stores, the number of libraries, how many books libraries circulated and education level.

Nashville ranked 27th for book stores, 29th for educational level, 22nd for online news reading and book purchasing, 14th for libraries, 49th for newspapers and 19th for magazines and journals.

The most literate cities were Seattle, Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. The five least literate were El Paso, Texas; Corpus Christi, Texas; Bakersfield, Calif.; Stockton, Calif.; and Aurora, Colo.

Nashville has seen an upswing in company headquarter-relocation in the last decade. Its’ central location, real estate market, and mild climate has made Nashville a hot spot for businesses.
