Whether you live here in Nashville or you’re just visiting, there’s a good chance you’ll be spending some time in some of the hottest music venues in the country. With such world-famous spots as Tootsie’s and The Stage, it’s no wonder we’re called Music City. If you really love your music, you may be missing out on some of the little-known spots around town. A lot of Nashville residents don’t even know these little gems, and that gives you the inside scoop.
First off is 3rd and Lindsley. This little venue has recently had a facelift, including more seating, a bigger stage, and some cosmetic work. It’s pretty amazing inside, and the additional room has made it possible to bring in some bigger names. You may not recognize everyone on the bill when you check the calendar, but you can be sure there’s one or two in your iTunes. What better way to find new music than to trust one of the hottest venues in town? Choose a night and make a point of getting out to discover a new artist.
What about the Rutledge? This hot spot is south of Broadway and offers some pretty compelling talent. There is plenty of country to be had here, but don’t get too complacent. The Rutledge can really rock, too. You can check out one of the showcases just about any night of the week. There is often a cover charge, but it’s definitely worth it for the music you’ll experience.
12th and Porter is another of the great Nashville music venues that brings in some pretty big names. These aren’t Kings of Leon, of course, but you are likely to see a few who’ve been on the Top 40 charts. 12th and Porter is pretty friendly to singer/songwriters, indie rock bands, and the occasional country performer. Most of the time it’s standing room only, so plan accordingly if you find an act you want to see.
If you’ve never been to The Basement on 8th Avenue, you’re really missing out. Most people have trouble finding this one on their first visit, giving the impression that they’re about to experience a well-kept secret. Indeed, the nearly underground venue here has the atmosphere of a speakeasy. The small stage houses some big sounds, and the intimate setting gives the audience a feeling of being part of the action.
On Division Street, you’ll find Winners and Losers, two separate bars that share one big thing – talent. Almost any night of the week, you’ll see some of the biggest names in music take the stage. It’s an intimate setting, and you may not even realize who you’re listening to until the set is over. This is where some of the premier songwriters in the city play for fun, and there’s never any telling who’s going to show up at any given time.
The next time you’re looking for something to do in Nashville, you can check out the Bridgestone Arena, the Ryman Auditorium, and even the Schermerhorn for some great performances. Just don’t forget that the music doesn’t stop there. Become a part of the secret and check out one of these smaller venues. You might see the next big thing before anyone else, and that’s an experience not many get to have.
